Southwark Climate Change Emergency slips yet again

The Southwark Liberal Democrats today criticised Labour led Southwark Council for further “Dither and Delay” on climate change – after delaying publication of its final Climate Change Strategy yet again.

In its monthly forward plans for decisions, the council quietly slipped the date by another month – originally scheduled to come to Cabinet in June but now publicised as July.  This means it will be released nearly 2.5 years after it declared a Climate Emergency.

Leader of the Southwark Liberal Democrats, Cllr Hamish McCallum, said:

“This is yet more dither and delay from Southwark Labour on climate change. Despite promising to publish this strategy in June, the council has now delayed it again to July. The delay was quietly slipped into the latest update to the council’s ‘Forward Plan’ and no official announcement has been made.

“The council unanimously declared a Climate Emergency in March 2019, but 28 months on and we are still waiting for the Labour administration to publish their plans. This dither and delay just isn’t acceptable.”

The Southwark Liberal Democrat Council Group are scrutinising Southwark labour and the council on its failure to act faster and more responsibly on climate change ‘to deadlines – not headlines’.  They have written to the cabinet members in charge outlining how the council could go ‘Go Greener Faster’ by taking responsible rapid actions to reduce the council’s carbon footprint immediately.
