On the 10 year anniversary of the vote to leave the European Union, Southwark Liberal Democrats are joining national calls to put Britain back in the heart of Europe.

They say that since Brexit, local businesses have struggled with red tape and rising costs. The Liberal Democrats have also accused the Labour government of choosing to place increasing burdens on businesses, instead of generating growth by joining the EU single market.

They are joining the national Liberal Democrats’ campaign to put Britain back in the heart of Europe, with joining the single market bringing Britain one step closer to joining the EU.

Southwark’s Liberal Democrat Leader has said that the group will bring a motion to a meeting of full council, which he says will demonstrate the strength of feeling Southwark has as an open, international, and diverse borough.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader of Southwark Council, Cllr Victor Chamberlain said:

“We urgently need the Labour government to put its weight behind rebuilding our relationship with Europe. Putting Britain back in the heart of Europe and ending this Brexit mess is the single easiest lever it can pull to reduce costs for families, and provide a much needed boost to independent businesses here in Southwark and across the country”

Southwark’s Liberal Democrat Executive Member for the Local Economy Cllr Rachel Bentley said:

“Local businesses are telling me all the time how hard it’s been since Brexit, and this Labour government’s only major intervention has been to hike up taxes on jobs. We need to cut the red tape and create real economic growth – we need to rejoin the EU single market as a first step towards joining the European Union.”
