Ed Davey: “Liberal Democrats are the only challengers to Labour in Southwark”
Leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey visited Southwark today (Friday 10th), joining local campaigners to highlight pressure on public services and step up the party’s election campaign.
During his visit, Ed Davey visited an Almshouse building development in Blackfriars, where he discussed community led developments and took part in construction works, including pouring concrete alongside Opposition Leader Cllr Victor Chamberlain.
Following the visit, Ed joined local Liberal Democrat candidates and activists for a rally before heading out to knock on doors across the Canada Estate in Rotherhithe, one of the party’s top target areas, speaking directly with residents about housing, crime, and the cost of living.
The visit comes as analysis by the BBC suggests Southwark could be heading towards no overall control at the next election, underlining the growing momentum behind the Liberal Democrats locally.
Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey said:
“Whether in government or in local councils, Labour are letting people down because they’re just not listening. They’re breaking their promises, raising taxes, and leaving our communities feeling ignored.
“The Liberal Democrats are the ones holding Labour to account nationally and standing up for our communities locally too.
“Here in Southwark, the Liberal Democrats are the only challengers to Labour. You can feel our momentum building across the borough. We have strong local champions who can win on May 7th and deliver for the people of Southwark.”
Southwark Liberal Democrat Leader of the Opposition Cllr Victor Chamberlain added:
“Ed’s visit shows just how seriously we’re taking this election. Across Southwark, residents are telling us the same thing: that the council isn’t working for them, and they want something different after years of Labour let down.
“That’s why we’ve set out our plan to Fix Southwark - focusing on the issues people raise with us every day, from crime and housing to the cost of living.
“With control of Southwark council hanging in the balance, this is a two-horse race. Only the Liberal Democrats can beat Labour here and deliver the change our borough needs.”
