Southwark Liberal Democrats have launched a new competition to find the worst roadworks in Southwark.

In a video released by Surrey Docks Councillor Adam Hood, he puts forward his nomination: a 6-way temporary traffic light scheme on Surrey Quays Road, which he says is wreaking havoc for local residents on the Rotherhithe peninsula.

The Surrey Quays Road scheme is happening at the same time as other works for the Canada Water Masterplan, and also coincides with the traffic chaos caused by the botched changes to Lower Road.

Earlier this year, the Liberal Democrats secured a big win for residents by getting the council to start again on Lower Road, taking into account suggestions that residents and councillors had been making all along.

Cllr Hood had also uncovered shocking statistics that show that despite highways contractors failing to meet half of their targets, the Labour-run council had no plans in place to improve them, and were continuing to pay the contractors.

The competition will run until the end of October – to enter, residents can email info@southwark-libdems.org.uk with the subject line “WORST ROADWORKS” where Cllr Hood will judge the nominees and announce a winner.

Commenting, Cllr Adam Hood said:

“The astonishing 6-way temporary traffic lights on Surrey Quays Road is just the latest highways headache for residents on the Rotherhithe peninsula caused by this Labour council.

The Lib Dem team have already secured changes from the Labour administration to relieve the Lower Road chaos but just when we've finished fixing one Labour mess they create another! Residents are fed up to the back teeth of these half baked traffic schemes that wreaking havoc for residents just trying to get around'

We’re launching this competition to help expose some of the ridiculous schemes this Labour council comes up with, and I look forward to judging the results!”
