Thames Clippers has announced new plans for a ferry crossing between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf.

The plans include a new, fully electric ferry and an upgraded, accessible pier on the Rotherhithe side. The crossing will cost £3.95 per journey.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat member for Surrey Docks ward Cllr Adam Hood said:

"After years of delays and cancelled projects it is a relief to see that something is being done thanks to tireless campaigning from locals. However, it's so disappointing to see such second rate plans for a Rotherhithe crossing. The Southwark Liberal Democrats have consistently called for investment in a footbridge that would provide a convenient and free way to get across the river for locals. Residents now have to settle for an expensive and inefficient ferry.

The mayor scrapped plans for a footbridge due to costs, yet is still stubbornly ploughing ahead with the unpopular, polluting Silvertown tunnel. The estimated cost of the Silvertown tunnel could pay for the Rotherhithe footbridge three times over."
