Liberal Democrats demand certainty over Walworth front counter’s future

Southwark Liberal Democrats have written to Sadiq Khan, Labour Mayor of London, demanding certainty about the future of Walworth’s police front counter.

Earlier this summer, the Mayor announced that 18 of the 37 front counters across London would close – despite making a manifesto commitment that every London borough would have a 24/7 front counter.

Whilst Walworth is not set to close – it has not been confirmed whether it will continue to operate 24/7 or with a reduced hours service.

The Liberal Democrats are continuing to campaign to ensure it is kept open, and have a petition that residents can sign urging the Mayor to keep it open 24/7.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Victor Chamberlain said:

“Whilst our campaign to save Walworth front counter has kept it from closing, the fight is not yet over. We’ve written to Sadiq Khan urging him to give residents certainty about whether residents will still be able to access in-person police services 24/7.

Residents are fed up of empty words and broken promises from the Labour party when it comes to crime and policing – with cuts to policing leading to Southwark council picking up the tab and employing a private security firm to do the job the Met should be doing.

With phone snatching reaching an all time high recently, and the Rotherhithe police hub closing earlier this spring, it’s absolutely vital that this essential service remains open at all times.”
