Labour’s broken promises revealed in audit of manifesto
Southwark Liberal Democrats have audited key pledges from Southwark Labour’s manifesto from 2022 – and found that the majority have not been kept.
Released on a bespoke website so residents can see for themselves the reality of Labour’s record, the audit found that two thirds of the promises were either not met or only partially met.
Crucially, it found that promises around housing delivery, crime, and the environment had not been met – and other commitments had been quietly dropped with the arrival of a Labour government.
Most notable is the commitment to start 1,000 council homes between 2022 and 2026 – a target that has been missed.
This comes after Sadiq Khan was exposed last year for breaking a key manifesto pledge to have a police front counter in every borough – with most London front counters closing, and Southwark being left with zero 24/7 police front counters following Walworth’s front counter closing at night.
Commenting, Southwark Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Victor Chamberlain said:
“Southwark Labour have got away for too long with spin and bluster to disguise their litany of broken promises locally and nationally.
On the doorstep we’re hearing disappointment with Labour turn increasingly into frustration. More and more people who have previously given them the benefit of the doubt are seeing the reality of a Labour party that is in power everywhere, but delivering nowhere.
Southwark Liberal Democrats have a plan to fix Southwark. We have a credible, liberal agenda for change – we will fix our housing crisis, tackle the cost of living, and make our streets safer and cleaner.”
