The campaign to bring Southwark Park Athletics Track back into use goes on...
Although the council money has now been formally allocated, we need to actually get the track back into use as soon as possible. We're not getting value for money while cash sits in the bank and the track sits derelict.
Local Liberal Democrat councillors have been asking regular formal council questions and meeting with council officers about progress. The good news is that the new designs have finally been produced - after lots of pressure from us.
The design includes reinstating the track, and a full range of field facilities (enabled by a grass infield):
- 6 lane athletics track incorporating 8 lane 100m straight
- Long/Triple Jump
- High Jump
- Pole Vault
- Hammer Cage
- Shot Put
- steeplechase pit
- Javelin runways
This is great progress, but we need to keep pressing the council so that there is no further dither and delay. This work has been agreed but Liberal Democrats want to see the state of the art leisure facilities which Bermondsey and Rotherhithe deserves. As well as the new athletics track, our manifesto for the council elections in May also includes plans to refurbish the Seven Islands Leisure Centre and include an outdoor lido in the park as well.
Once again the council has the money sitting in bank accounts and we want to see it being used on the side of local residents.
Thank you to those who have supported us on the athletics track campaign and signed our petition.
