Southwark Liberal Democrats have called for an urgent independent review into the safety of council properties across Southwark in direct response to the devastating fire in Kensington last week.
With over 170 tower blocks dotted across Southwark, the council has been quick to reassure residents of their safety and highlighted the works carried out in recent years to improve the safety of council properties. However in light of the tragic events that took place last week at Grenfell Tower, Southwark Liberal Democrats believe it is right to review the fire safety plans in place across the borough and the decisions made by the council, particularly around cladding, sprinklers, fire escapes and advice to residents.
Southwark Liberal Democrats Leader, Councillor Anood Al-Samerai, said:
“Our thoughts go out to all those affected by the devastating fire in Kensington. Here in Southwark, we must urgently review the safety of council properties. No one should feel unsafe in their own home and it would be wrong to be complacent about the investment that has been made in recent years. That is why we are calling for a comprehensive and independent review examining fire safety.”
