Simon Hughes today welcomed the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, which showed that there were 124 fewer unemployed claimants in Bermondsey and Old Southwark compared to September 2013. The number of claimants is 747 lower than in October 2012. This is part of a national trend, with more people in employment compared with the previous quarter and the previous year.
Mr. Hughes said 'this further small but welcome drop in unemployment follows on from the recent statement by the Governor of the Bank of England that the recovery is beginning to take hold'. 'I will continue to do all that I can to press for more jobs, training and apprenticeships locally and nationally to make sure that this positive trend continues'.
