Thank you to everyone who gave us their support in the local elections. We worked very hard to get across our local message across, speaking to thousands of residents about our ambitious vision for Southwark. A huge thank you goes to all the volunteers who delivered leaflets, knocked on doors, made phone calls or helped in other ways, big and small.
Ultimately, however, Labour ran an intense and well-resourced campaign in many Lib Dem wards (focussing almost entirely on national, rather than local, issues) and the results didn’t go in our favour.
Despite having some of the best results against Labour in London, we are hugely disappointed we were unable to hold on to all our councillors. We have lost some fantastic colleagues and friends who have been brilliant representatives for their communities and simply did not deserve to lose.
In Southwark, Liberal Democrats returned 13 councillors including five who have been elected for the first time. They will all be getting to work straight away to deal with ward issues and continue to look after the best interests of residents.
As a council group, we will continue to hold Labour councillors to account for the decisions they make about Southwark and its communities. We will not be leaving the areas where we lost Liberal Democrats councillors, but will be fighting hard to win back their support next time.
Thank you again to everyone who helped us achieve what we did. We could not have re-elected as many councillors as we did without all your support and hard work.
