Southwark Lib Dems sign up to 10:10 climate change campaign8.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sat 3rd Oct 2009 Following pressure from the Liberal Democrats, Southwark Council has signed up to the 10:10 campaign to cut the borough's carbon emissions by 10% by 2010. Lib Dem Executive member for the Environment, Cllr Paul Kyriacou said: "Action is needed now on climate change which is why I'm pleased that Southwark has signed up to 10:10. But we want to go further which is why I've set a target of a 60% reduction from current levels by 2016. "We're embarking on a programme of using outside grants and some of the Council's own resources to improve insulation and energy efficiency in both private and council owned homes. "Southwark Lib Dems are also campaigning for better public transport across the borough, including more bus services for areas such as Rotherhithe and East Dulwich, and to protect the vital rail services on the South London Line which are under threat from the Labour government and Network Rail. "Under the Lib Dems the Council has also increased recycling levels since 2002 from 3% to 21%, and with planning permission now granted for the new recycling centre on Old Kent Road we can go even further, with a target of 50% of household waste to be recycled by 2016."
