Southwark Lib Dems Call for Immediate Cease-Fire3.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 7th Aug 2006
Local MP, Simon Hughes, today handed in a petition to the Prime Minister calling on him to support an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. Hundreds of residents from all over London gave their support to the Lib Dem petition. Liberal Democrats are calling on Tony Blair to back our European allies and the UN Secretary General by insisting that there should be an immediate cease-fire in the region so that a negotiated settlement could be found as soon as possible. It also urged the Prime Minister to halt arms exports to the region that are still fuelling this conflict. Hundreds of signatures were collected over the weekend at the Vibrations and Carnaval del Pueblo festivals in Burgess Park. Before handing in the petition Simon Hughes said: "I'm grateful to all those local festival visitors who signed this petition last weekend. "This petition shows the strength of London public opinion for an end to the current violence in Israel and Lebanon. "Yet again the Prime Minister is ignoring the views of large numbers of people in London and across the country. I shall keep up the pressure for peace and justice in the Middle East."
