Labour pensions crisis to hit Southwark services - Lib Dems

5.30.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 24th Mar 2006

Southwark Liberal Democrats have condemned the Labour Government for allowing talks over local government pensions to break down.

The resulting strike on Tuesday will lead to many Southwark Council services suffering, with waste collection and street cleaning set to be hit the hardest.

The Lib Dem Executive has instructed officers to get information on waste and other services out to as many residents as possible to ensure the impact of the strike is kept to a minimum for residents.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat Leader of the Council, Cllr Nick Stanton said:

"This Labour Government is in meltdown over pensions and it's unfair that Southwark workers and residents will have to suffer."

"Local government workers are rightly furious with Labour for the way they have been treated and Tuesday's strike is the sorry result."

"Southwark's services will be hit, but we are trying to get information to residents and are urging people to be as patient as possible."
