GCSE Results Show Secondary Education in Lib Dem Southwark Is On The Up9.30.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 1st Sep 2004 Lib Dem run Southwark Council says that the provisional GCSE results for the whole borough show that there has been an increase on last year's overall result, and that schools and their pupils are to be congratulated. The results are yet to be finalised, but the signs are that the overall figure for pupils receiving five or more A* to C grades has increased to 41%. Some schools have made excellent progress since last year, including an 11% increase in A* to C grades at St Michael's secondary school, and 6% and 5% increases at Aylwin and Waverley schools respectively. Councillor Bob Skelly, executive member for education said: "The provisional GCSE results show that overall there has been steady progress for schools in Southwark and we would like to congratulate all of the schools concerned. The provisional LEA average is an increase on last year and puts us ahead of our target. Together with the key stage 3 results this is a real indication that secondary education in the borough is on the move."
