Lib Dems become largest party in Southwark again12.00.00am GMT Fri 13th Feb 2004 The Liberal Democrats yesterday regained their position as the largest party in Southwark council after a significant by-election victory in East Walworth. On a turnout of nearly 33% (up from a 26% turnout at the last council elections) the winning Liberal Democrat candidate Jane Salmon won 1,477 votes (56%) to trounce Labour Candidate Rhodri Thomas who had only 978 votes (37%). The Conservatives came third with only 86 Votes (3%) coming just ahead of the Green Party who had 82 votes. The result is a significant encouragement for Liberal Democrats in London following their capture of a previously safe Labour seat in Haringey two weeks ago and strengthens their chance of winning the Southwark and Lambeth seat in the GLA elections next year. The win also boosts the campaign of London Mayoral candidate Simon Hughes, the local MP. Mr Hughes said: "The real votes in the ballot box in London show the Lib Dems holding and winning ground and Labour and the Conservatives stalling badly. Labour threw everything at this seat and they have a bloody nose to show for it. "This year's results so far are the best possible prelude to the June elections."
