Southwark Liberal Democrats have responded to the formal launch of a new ‘childcare commission’ in the borough, saying it would be better if the council took real action for parents rather than just “another long-winded review”.
Liberal Democrat councillors have already committed to offering free childcare hours to local 2, 3 and 4 year olds if elected to run the council in May’s local elections. In response, Southwark Labour has instigated a joint Lambeth and Southwark childcare commission launched today (25 March 2014), to report back at an unspecified future date.
Southwark Liberal Democrats’ full manifesto policy paper on education and childcare is published online at www.southwark-libdems.org.uk/kids.
Commenting on today’s announcement of the new commission, Cllr Rosie Shimell, Liberal Democrat Shadow Cabinet member for Children & Young People, said:
"Southwark Liberal Democrats have already committed in our 2014 manifesto to giving free childcare hours for all 2, 3 and 4 year olds, saving parents £448 per child."
"I’m pleased that Labour are now taking this issue seriously, but instead of spending more public money on yet another long-winded review they should put the money back into parents’ pockets now."
