A 'Southwark Cycling Summit' discussing road safety and facilities for bike users was held in Bermondsey last week (Wed 11 Dec), organised by local Liberal Democrats.
Cyclists from across the borough joined discussions and workshops on a number of bike-related topics including segregated bike lanes and dealing with potholes. It also featured a closing speech by Cambridge MP Julian Huppert, co-chairs of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cycling at Westminster.
Following the summit, Southwark Liberal Democrats have appealed for cyclists in Southwark to take part in their online consultation about improving the borough's roads and encouraging more people onto two-wheels. The results of the survey will be used to push Transport for London and Southwark Council into action on bike safety, and will form the basis of the Liberal Democrat council group's cycling policy going into next year's local elections.
The 'Cycling Vision' consultation is now available online via www.southwark-libdems.org.uk/cyclingvision.
Everybody who fills in the survey will be in the draw for a free bike service from On Your Bike at London Bridge.
The Cycling Summit event was already planned before the recent deaths of six cyclists in London in the past two weeks - however, discussion about how to prevent further tragedies dominated discussions. A minute's silence was also held at the beginning of the summit to remember the 14 cyclists killed on London's roads this year.
It follows a similar successful event organised by Southwark Liberal Democrats in March 2012.
Commenting, Cllr Graham Neale, Southwark Liberal Democrats' Shadow Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport, said:
"I am grateful to everyone who took time out on a chilly December night to join our discussion about cycling in the borough. There was clearly a lot of passion and enthusiasm in the room to make Southwark a premier cycling borough by making it safer, easier and more enjoyable for everyone."
"Any local cyclists who couldn't come along can still tell us what they think by taking a few minutes to respond to our online survey at www.southwark-libdems.org.uk/cyclingvision."
"Liberal Democrats are on the side of cyclists and want to work with them to make Southwark one of the top cycling boroughs in London."s
